Turning Goth

So my ten year old daughter comes up to me today. She's a little concerned about her friend Matthew.
"Dad, he said yesterday that he might be turning Goth."

"Hmmmm? What? One night he's going to turn Goth in his sleep, and look Goth when shows up at school the next day?"
"No Dad, He says he's happy on the inside, but not so much outside." (With "God, you are such an idiot" look.)

LOL! I thought it was funny -- had to struggle not to laugh. I know she's concerned, but it was a funny way of describing Goth. I guess that's Goth to a ten year old.

Security?

So I recently took the Red Rocket family to see the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey circus. The arena security was searching people's backpacks and purses for contraband and video cameras.*
The 3 of us passed through and on my way past the security guard, I noticed a sign that said no guns, knives or tools were allowed inside. At that point I realized that I was wearing my Leatherman tool on my belt. Now, I had just been lightly searched. My pockets had been patted, and the guard asked me to pull my jacket open so he could see my belt.
Now, I (having fogotten I was wearing the Letherman) was not trying to hide it, and it was sitting there on my belt in full view. It's kind of scary that he didn't see it or question it. He did ask questions about my iPaq PDA that was in my coat.
Kind of scary actually. Makes you wonder what weapons you could sneak into an arena if you were really trying.

* Video cameras -- They were specifically looking for video cameras. But plenty of people were bringing in regular digital cameras. Am I the only one that sees the futility of this? I have two digital cameras, both of which take pefectly acceptable video -- one even takes it at 30 frames per second which is "movie quality", and with only about 5 or 6 memory cards, I could have video'd the entire performance.

TGI Fridays = Salt

Went to TGI Friday's last night with Wife of Redrocket and Spawn of Redrocket.

Yeesh. Salt!
I had salt for dinner.

It was supposed to be a steak and some shrimp. Instead it was salt. And it had a nice salt sauce for dipping. I think the cheesecake even had salt.
Good grief, that must be why I normally avoid chain restaurants.

A new beginning. And an end.

So. It's October 2006. I'm gonna make another attempt at blogging. It may not be anything spectacular, but I'll try to post something every week or so.

To start:

CBGBs.

It's done now. The last music ever to be played there was played last night. While I was never into the punk scene of the 70s and 80s, I appreciate the conribution it made to the music I do listen to. (I do like Blondie)

I guess it's moving to Las Vagas -- interior bits and all. It's not going to be the same. It'll end up being a Disney-esque version of CBGB's. Which if you think about it, is proobably the most ironic and sad fate that a place like CBGBs could have. It would be better to kill it quickly, than have it linger on as a commercialized parody of itself.
